ROOL Christmas break

The RISC OS Open team will be taking a long-overdue break for the festive season from the 22nd December to the 2nd January (inclusive). During that period, we will not be responding to email enquiries or processing orders, but will catch up again when we’re back.

Have a happy Christmas and here’s to a prosperous New Year!

The server hosting the ROOL web site and source repository services will be offline for maintenance work later today. It should only take an hour or two.

Seasons Greetings!

As Christmas and the New Year is upon us, the team at ROOL is taking a well earned holiday for a couple of weeks. As such, please expect that allocation requests, source code submissions and other enquiries will take longer for us to process than normal.

Don’t panic though; we will be back in the New Year and dealing with things as normal again.

May we take this opportunity to wish you all a happy holiday and prosperous New Year!

— the ROOL team

CVS repository incremental archives

To help people who want to keep a mirror of our CVS repository on their own machines, we’ve been publishing a cvs-repos tarball on our downloads pages which includes all of the repository (minus the CVSROOT directory that you have to create yourself). This tarball is automatically generated in the early hours of each morning (UK time).

However, this is a bit wasteful of bandwidth and painful for people to download and dearchive every time they want to update their local mirror. So to help out, we’ve introduced three smaller tarballs:

1. cvs-repos-day
2. cvs-repos-week
3. cvs-repos-month

These are each rebuilt every morning but only include files which have changed in the last 24 hours, seven days or one month respectively. We hope this makes things much easier for keeping your mirrored source repositories up to date.

Note: due to the way they are built, the archives do include lots of empty directories (the whole directory structure) but none of the repository files unless they changed within the specified time period.

Everything just got a bit cheaper

RISC OS Open have deregistered for VAT so we are no longer adding this to our prices. That means unless you were already VAT registered yourself, our prices are now 15% cheaper. Every penny counts!

Autobuilds and daily updates

RISC OS Open have finished implementing a system which automatically rebuilds the source code tarballs on the web site.

We have also automated the process of testing various builds and uploading the results to our web site – assuming the builds don’t fail!

Over time, we will be extending this process to build more and more components straight from our source repository so you can be sure that the versions of software that you download from our web site are reasonably up-to-date.

RISC OS Open have registered with the ARM Connected Community in order to try and boost our exposure outside of the existing RISC OS community.

RISCOS Ltd / RISC OS Open Ltd Joint Press Release

Right back to the days of Acorn, there have been two distinct strands of RISC OS development. These two strands were developed to exploit different markets and hardware platforms. The Castle Technology strand is used in a number of products, including the IYONIX PC and various set top boxes. The RISCOS Ltd strand is also used in a number of different products, including the A9Home, the VirtualAcorn range of software emulators and as upgrades to existing Acorn computers via the RISC OS Select scheme.

Sources to both strands are available free of charge to developers. One strand is gradually being published under the Castle Technology Shared Source initiative by RISC OS Open Ltd. The RISCOS Ltd strand is available to Registered Developers and Hardware Manufacturers under NDA or as part of the Authorised Manufacturer Scheme, for both commercial and non-commercial exploitation.

Today, RISC OS Open (ROOL) and RISCOS Ltd (ROL) are pleased to announce an agreement to enable co-operation in the development of these two strands of RISC OS.

ROOL Mouse Mat Project

We at ROOL are planning to start selling mouse mats to help raise funds to contribute towards our work on the Shared Source RISC OS project. We are planning on having a “map of the RISC OS community” as the mouse mat design. All of the profits that we make from selling the mouse mats and from donations are put towards administration of the Shared Source RISC OS project. The project is reaching a new phase now so all contributions are very welcome!
