USB sticks available from ROOL site

ROOL are very happy to announce the immediate availability of two different ROOL-branded USB sticks to buy from the ROOL store.

These sticks represent a proud milestone for RISC OS Open; we’ve been working towards creating a stand-alone RISC OS solution for Windows and Mac users since we formed in 2006. Thanks to everyone who made this possible!

New offers and new prices for the latest Developer Tools

RISC OS Open is pleased to announce the formal release of version 22 of the ROOL Desktop Development Environment (DDE) tools. Building upon the interim version 21, which was released earlier this year, the main feature of these releases is a major upgrade to the assembler ObjAsm and its associated documentation. ROOL is also announcing new reduced prices and special offers.

ObjAsm Updates

ObjAsm now fully supports the new UAL variant of the ARM instruction set, including over 400 new instructions. UAL syntax is supported up to ARMv7, VFPv4 and NEON™, for CPUs up to the Cortex™-A9. Pre-UAL syntax for ARM and Thumb is extended to its final version for ARMv6 and VFPv3. A significant number of extensions to the supporting assembly language have also been added, many of which have up to now only been available in ObjAsm’s counterpart in ARM’s RVDS™ toolchain, and the ObjAsm manual (supplied in PDF format) has been fully revised and updated so you can make best use of these.

All the new instructions, and some related new relocation types, are fully supported by Link and the disassembly tool DecAOF. An extension to the AOF object file format, to support new types of floating point linkage (mainly related to the introduction of VFP support) is supported in ObjAsm, Link and DecAOF.

Other Updates

Updated versions of SparkFS and !PDF are included. Squeeze has been adapted for compatibility with the A9Home. There have been a number of bugfixes to various components too. For full details, see here and here.

New IYONIX ROM release (version 5.16)

RISC OS Open (ROOL) are pleased to announce the immediate release of the very latest RISC OS ROM release from Castle Technology (Castle) for the IYONIX pc desktop computer.

This is an official release from Castle and represents the second formal ROM release to include changes and improvements which have been fed back into the shared source project.

You can download your copy of RISC OS 5.16, either as a softload (to try it out) or as a ROM programmer tool, from this page.

Please note that in order to fix the incorrect date bug seem on some machines in 2010 with RISC OS 5.15 or earlier, you must program the ROM into Flash.

IYONIX pc 2012 date problem

Many of you will be aware of a bug in the handling of a year counter in the IYONIX pc which means that the date on some machines changes to 2012 when they are booted. This is a software problem and a number of work-arounds already exist.

However, Castle Technology feel that this is a sufficiently severe fault to justify starting work on the next official release of RISC OS 5 for the IYONIX pc – RISC OS 5.15.

The latest version will not only address the date problem mentioned above, but will include many of the changes and improvements implemented since RISC OS 5.14 was released back in April 2009. Once it is available, users should program the new release into their machines using a supplied flash programmer to ensure that the date bugfix is correctly installed.

Keep an eye on the RISC OS Open web site over the next week or two for further news on the testing and release process.

Note to developers: the development version of RISC OS will move to 5.16 (beta) as soon as the new official version is released.

Official Tools CD available for online purchase

Some time ago, RISC OS Open took over the official set of C/C++ Development Tools for RISC OS. We are pleased to announce that these can now be purchased for £50 (plus £1 p&p, plus VAT) from our sale page here.

There are already some minor updates and fixes to our latest build of the Tools, including:

fix to divide by zero error in
modsqz

fix to buffer overrun in the
link
tool

minor changes to the C compiler,
cc

the
decaof
tool now supports a significant number of ARM v6 an v7 instructions

We hope to continue to add to and improve the Tools for as long as they are the only sensible way to build the published RISC OS sources.
