Definitions

  1. a file is an object that stores data
  2. a directory is used to store files (and/or more directories)
  3. an object may be either a file or a directory
  4. a pathname specifies the location of an object, and may include a filing system name, a special field, a media name, directory name(s), and the name of the object itself. Each of these parts of a pathname is knows as an element of the pathname
  5. a full pathname is a pathname that includes all relevant elements
  6. a leafname is the last element of a full pathname
