Software information: HardDisc4 (self-extracting)

category: Help

Important

This .util file is the version to use in conjunction with the ‘InstallHD4’ script contained within the ‘Beagle ROM’ zipfile and the instructions on the Generic OMAP port setup information page.

(The .tar.bz file ‘HardDisk4’ listed under Collections of pre-built components is not self-extracting and is unsuitable for use with the automated script.)

About HardDisc4.util

This is the RISC OS 5 disc image. It includes all of the disc-based components required to boot and run a RISC OS 5 system, including:

  • Boot sequence
  • Configuration plug-ins
  • Screensaver applications
  • Network setup utility
  • Desktop applications and utilities
  • Games

How to Install

This is a self-extracting code download. Simply download onto a RISC OS system, ensure the filetype is set to ‘Utility’ (&FFC) via the Filer menu and then double-click to run it. The contents will be decompressed into the same directory.

If you wish, you can run from the command line by simply running the file and optionally pass a destination directory as a parameter (to avoid decompressing into the same location as the self-extracting archive). E.g.

*SetType $.HardDisc4/util Utility
*Run $.HardDisc4/util $.temp

Note that if extracting to/from an SD card via a USB card reader you’ll need to be very patient. This can be avoided by doing the entire extraction on the RAM disc (30MB will be more than adequate) before moving to your memory stick.

Known Issues

It is currently a work in progress with some known issues:

  • It is only intended for RISC OS 5 systems. If you’re softloading RO5 over an earlier OS, the boot sequence probably does not contain all you’d need to get to the softload point.
  • It’s only really been beta tested on the Beagleboard and RPCemu with RO5.
  • It may be missing some important bits for booting an IYONIX pc.
  • The full range of fonts are not yet present.
