Cannot boot 5.24 on RPi 3B+

Why does everyone think it’s a problem with the SD card? Have you tried booting the machine without any USB devices attached? There’s a some known issue with some keyboards & mice causing problems under RISC OS. |

I’m not saying it is…all I was offering is a tested/verified bootable SD card to help find the root of the problem. If the verified SD card works then the issue is likely either the old SD card, the image-writing process or the image itself. If it doesn’t work then the issue is more likely to be the hardware (maybe some difference with the 3B+, or a genuine fault) or the way it is setup (USB devices, power supply and monitor are all worth checking) |

I don’t, I just thought it was worth check since there were 2 separate cases. I think somebody has confirmed it working now.
I did give that advise here but since this thread was created 24 hours later, I must’ve cross my wires and forgot that step here. Unfortunately I don’t have a spare SD to run some tests, and I have a custom 5.25 setup, so testing on one of my setups wont help. |

Hi, I seem to recall I had issues with getting one of the images to work on the 3B+ when it came out. If I get time I will try the process again to confirm if this is still the case. EDIT – Ignore the above. |

I think I checked without a keyboard early on, but to be sure I tried it again. With only HDMI and power connected (no keyboard) I still get the blinking _. |

I’ve just downloaded the 5.24 image zip file. Extracted the img file. Used Win32DiskImager that I’ve always used on PC. Re. power, I’ve just noticed I’ve been using the 5.0V 2A one and not the 5.1V 2.5A. Card here is SanDisk Ultra 16GB. With no card I get nothing. If I rename CONFIG.TXT and boot I get multicolour square. Curious, renaming FIXUP.DAT has no effect. If you put the card in a PC, can you see these files in a drive called “PiBoot”? If I rename the !Boot folder within riscos, (do NOT try this at home!), it still boots to splash screen, some text and Supervisor prompt. If you are getting a blinking “_” then something must be starting up to get it to display that. |

I get a PiBoot drive with the files mentioned when inserted in my Apple laptop, apart from Renaming config.txt results in a large multicolour square. I do not have anything at hand to check if there is a sound as the smartphone earplugs I have are too fat to fit the RPi seems. The monitor does not have a speaker. I use the official power supply with 5.1V. |

“SAMSUNG EVO PLUS 32 GB” 95mb read speed is the one I got that works like a champion |

Oh you got it to work? Is that the new one you ordered? Edit: Nevermind. I saw you updated the other post. |

I got it to work and I am typing this using RISC OS on my RPi! I went to a another local shop and got a Transcend 32GB class 10 card, flashed it with Etcher and it just worked! |

So I bought one and installed RiscOS. There are two issues though: - when I click Menu:Free over :0, it shows: 1875 Mbytes. That can’t be the size of the volume? Is there anything I did wrong? |
James Wheeler (3283) 344 posts |
Nope. The image is only formatted to 2 gig. If you want bigger, you need to create your own using SystemDisc or ask someone on the forum to create a 32GB image for you. I would create a 32GB image for you, but I wouldn’t be able to test it. |

These seem to contradict? |

Thanks for the offer, James, but I ordered a copy of SystemDisc. |
Peter Scheele (2290) 172 posts |
Yes, Martin. I have two Pis. On both I see the discs of my Iyonix (two drives), but on my Iyonix I don’t see the newest Pi. Both Pis run 5.24, the Iyonix 5.16. I see now that both my Pi’s drives have the same name. Does it matter? As the newst one needs to be reformatted, I’ll give it a different name. |
Martin Avison (27) 1417 posts |
The actual disc names can be the same – HardDisc4 is popular! Confusingly, *Help Share gives: but discname in this context is the name under which the path appears in the list of shared discs. |
Peter Scheele (2290) 172 posts |
They are shared with different names. The strange thing is that the newest Pi doesn’t show itself in it’s own Discs, nor in the Discs of the other machines, while the other machines are OK. It’s no matter of hardware (Pi or network cable): swapping SD cards moves the problem to the other machine… |

How are you setting up the share(s) on the suspect machine/card? It sounds as if an obey file is not being actioned – maybe boot is terminating prematurely. |
Peter Scheele (2290) 172 posts |
It’s a brand new installation on a brand new card. No disc is shown. The only thing I did after starting was to click Boot:Network:Internet:Hostnames to change the Hostname in PiTop2. Then I restarted. No disc shown either. I can’t imagine a failure in the RISCOSPi.5.24.zip. |
Martin Avison (27) 1417 posts |
With a brand new installation from an image file, is the disc shared by default? |

The first FWshow output confirms that… Exactly what commands are being issued to *Share the discs on PiTop2? The second FWshow is running on your Iyonox, and looks ok. If you have 2 Pi machines on your network, are you sure they have different domain names and IP addresses? I would expect that the FWShow output should be the same on all machines in your network, except that the * at the start of a line indicates that this is on the machine being used. |

I am interested in a 32GB image, would it be possible to have such available? A 16GB might also do, I consider getting one such card also for it, though given the previous experience, I have some fear about whether it will work. If I am to create one myself, I would need: 1) a second SD card, 2) a USB to SD adapter and 3) SystemDisc? |

If you are serious out using your Pi3 then i would recommend that you get a copy of SystemDisc, you are also not limited to booting from SDcard you can boot from any USB device. |

Yep |
