EU copyright changes

Are these proposed changes to EU copyright going to effect the use of software Programs? |

Perhaps? I haven’t looked into it in any detail. Github’s got a couple of blog posts which suggests it could affect open-source software development. Nothing obvious suggesting that it’ll affect day-to-day software use though – I think the changes are mainly around requiring big media sharing sites (YouTube, etc.) to make more of an effort to detect and prevent illegal sharing of copyrighted works. But that may inadvertently affect the way free/open-source code/programs are shared as well. |

Often it seems the inadvertent effects of laws cause the most problems for ‘normal’ citizens! |

In this case my guess is that the problem-causing effects may be genuinely inadvertent. Only too often such “inadvertent” effects are in truth anything but inadvertent. |

Many articles by experts have been written to examine the changes and predicting the bad things to come. It looks like they were all ignored for some mythical gain I cannot see when this law comes into force. But who still believes that politicians understand anything? Personally I guess that at least as many bad decisions are caused by complete stupidity and not by malice. Well, the voter gets what he/she voted for. |

At my French class last week I asserted that whilst the majority for Brexit was some 50-something percent I’d never met anyone who voted for – and … this loony woman said she could invite lots of friends to disabuse me of that! I was shocked, and won’t use that line again! They do exist, unfortunately! One waits for the miracle! |

Woman is just co-incidental (quelle chance!), but I know she’s a loony because she said my French was “A” level! |

There’s a Yes Minister quote for every occasion. Minister: Why do you experts always think you’re right? |

John – yup, I’ve come across some myself who practically live and breath Daily Express headlines. I guess it’s a sad and damning indictment on the general quality of education that so many people are so completely duped. Some start to have murmurs of worry when they begin to realise that things aren’t tickety boo, yet they are reassured by some of the most odious politicians ever to grace the hallways of Westminster… As for the copyright, it’s yet another time Big Media is going to screw the world over. The problem with copyright is not that it exists, but that it is biased and unfair and “benefits” only a very select group. Consider if I quote a line of a song in a story I wrote. Chances are I would need permission. For one single line. And in many cases, such permission would come with a price tag attached. And in most cases, such permission and payment would involve a third party and not the one who actually wrote the line in question. If people want to reform copyright, how about giving the little people some options too? Because the way it is right now is horribly unbalanced. Oh, and EU, please mandate that if the rights of a European are infringed, then they have the automatic right to pursue this in a European court. Why? To get around the insanity of America who will use various excuses to have the case heard in the US, a country that requires registration of copyright (something specifically not required by the Berne Convention) to which any American lawyer will point to and say “not registered in the US? then you have no right to damages” making the entire thing us a big expensive waste of time that favours the American (surprise surprise). |

Hmmm, could this be a factor? ;-) |

Part of it seems to depend on where the infringing copies are hosted. I had some photos available online, with a copyright notice attached. I found one had been copied and uploaded to a third-party photo sharing site. Fortunately they had a form for reporting copyright violations, and the photo was swiftly removed without any arguments. That’s how it should be (although I’d hope that there would be arguments if I wasn’t actually the copyright holder – I did provide evidence). |

There are always perils with putting anything out there. I had a photo of my car lifted from my gallery and get used to advertise an accessory by many online retailers. I was mildly irritated, yet amused. |

I believe it was actually about 51 percent of those who cast a vote as opposed to those eligible to vote.
All things considered I think with a small re-write that should probably go on the board by my desk. |

It’s on my blog somewhere, but I worked out that “the democratic 1 will 2 of the people” relates to around 37% of the electorate, and something akin to 27% of “the people” according to population estimates.
Isn’t it basically a simplified version of the Dunning-Kruger effect? 1 “Democratic” as in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea… 2 I’m sure the “will of the people” is for a functioning health service, lower taxes, and trains that run on time. Will the government implement all of this with the same fervour? |
