RISC OS 5.26 on a Raspberry Pi 3B

I was able to burn a full disk image (the one with NetSurf, NutPi, etc.) onto a 16Gb MicroSD card, using Etcher 1.4.6 (64-bit Windows version) in Windows 10. Plugged it into the Raspberry Pi 3B and it works perfectly. Boots up quick. Now comes the question: how do I get online with RISC OS 5.26? What pref/tool/app can I use to “connect” to our WiFi network? RISC OS 5.26 looks gorgeous on our 45" LED LCD TV, but looks won’t get you online! :-D I also bought a Raspberry Pi 3B+, but I’m assuming the only real difference between them is 200MHz faster CPU, a Bluetooth version update, and dual-band (vs. single-band on the Raspberry Pi 3B) WiFi connectivity and PoE. So my Wifi connection question would apply on both units. |

If I’m correct Risc OS isn’t compatible with Wi-Fi at this point in time, so you’ll have to use an Ethernet cable and connect your Pi to your router. |

Or use an Ethernet bridge – i.e. a device that plugs into the ethernet socket and provides WiFi. They are less than £20. |

I use one of these: With one of these: One Vonets WiFi bridge, space for four RISC OS devices. Things just plug into each other and “it works”. |

AWESOME! I have a NetGear AC750 Wifi Extender (we bought it for that purpose) that plugs into a wall outlet. It has an Ethernet (RJ45) port on it and a switch that says “Access Point” or “Extender”. I switched it to “Access Point” and then discovered that was not the correct mode to use, after looking up the manual online. Assuming this device will fulfill the purpose I need, once I’ve plugged everything in (standard Ethernet cable connecting the Raspberry Pi 3B to the NetGear device) and powered everything up, what do I need to do next? Will I simply to able to use NetSurf as though the Raspberry Pi 3B was directly connected to the router? |

Quite possibly. Modern installations of RISC OS come configured to use DHCP. If it doesn’t work you’ll need to investigate network configuration to see what is going wrong. Some of the command line tools are similar to Unix, e.g. ping ifconfig -a |

Ok, I’m puzzled. In trying to configure the Netgear Wifi Extender (http://www.mywifiext.net), I kept getting a “Host is not resolved” error message. I went to the Network Config program and activated AUN. Clicked on Set and rebooted when it asked. Then I was getting the Extender setup screen! However, NetSurf CANNOT click on any of the buttons (it says so right in the status bar at the bottom of the NetSurf Window!), so I had to use my Windows laptop to do that part. Any idea why NetSurf can’t click on buttons? I tried going to www.google.com and it said “Loading” for awhile and then said it timed out. Anyways, then something happened and my Wifi Extender shut off. When I powered it back on and tried to go to Google again, it was saying “Host nor resolved” again! So I went back to Network Config and AUN was off! So I reactivated it and rebooted when it asked. Upon trying to go to Google again, it said the same thing! Went back to AUN and it was off again! Long story short… no matter how many times I turn AUN on, when I reboot to “set” it, it’s off again. In other words, the setting never sticks! Anyone else have this happen? I had a thought pop into my head… do you HAVE to manually shutdown RISC OS on the Raspberry Pi 3B, before unplugging power (I have it plugged into a USB3 port on a running computer) or can you just unplug power at any time without shutting down first? If the former, can RISC OS Pi get munged up and exhibit issues like mine? If so, is there a way to fix it within RISC OS or do I need to just reflash the microSD card again and make sure to always shutdown first? |

Netsurf has little or no Javascript, and most router setups require it. If you hover over the button, the bottom part of the Netsurf window shows what the link is. It probably says “script” in there somewhere. |
