Data transfer protocol

It seems from various reports that some recent changes have broken the data transfer protocol which uses the WimpScrap protocol. I sincerely hope that this is being fixed with some urgency! Many of my applications use this and use it correctly, exactly as per the PRMs. I do not intend to offer support except to say it is a RISC OS problem that will soon be fixed and advise against using untested beta versions. I shall suggest they wait until RISC OS 5.28 to upgrade, which will, of course, be tested and work correctly. For the meantime, RISC OS 5.27 should show a red symbol for all platforms! However I cannot, at present, actually demonstrate the problem as I don’t know under which conditions the bug appears and there are no bugs yet on the bug tracker… |

What reports? (Yes, I know where it hasn’t been said). It seems that the new clipboard support in the OS gets the Data Transfer Protocol wrong when sending data via Scrap. This doesn’t “break the Data Transfer Protocol” – it just means that anything trying to use the protocol for the very specific case of sending data to the Wimp’s new icon clipboard system for pasting into an icon will fail to get the data there if a RAM Transfer isn’t used.
It looks as if a fix was accepted four days ago, so I would guess that it is already in the nightly builds.
Why? This bug only stops something working that wasn’t in the OS anyway until it was added. It does not break anything. |

So a Beta OS has an issue and you say wait until 5.28 ..brilliant so what do you say when another issue comes up in 5.28 because you discouraged people from testing a Beta release. You do know what Beta releases are about? I understand your concern with your software but that is your choice to offer support or say sorry I can’t unless your software is the reason the fault manifests itself in which case you miss the opportunity to help fix it. Beta’s carry a warning and were you not calling for some sort of interim stable release a while back and saying it is a great pity there are no snapshots of ROMs. I encourage anyone who feels condfident to install and test Beta roms and disc images as that way we all benefit from a more polished and bug free stable release. |

Why? This bug only stops something working that wasn’t in the OS anyway until it was added. It does not break anything. Many thanks. Panic over then. I had placed the wrong interpretation on things, that the protocol itself in the Wimp was broken. |
