A decent case for the original Pi

I finally found a case that I like. (So I will give up trying to get my Iyonix stable.) |

There is an updated variant for Pi B+ and Pi 2 available: MEDIAPI+ Link to PDF manual here Also automatically motivates you to start a project to integrate the included IR remote with RISC OS. |

Have you seen the PlusBerry Pi? Not dissimilar to the Media Pi case but fits Rev.2 and later boards. And it also boots direct from an internal 2.5in SATA drive under RISC OS – see here |

I saw that, however for an owner of an original Pi, is there a huge boost for RISC OS? I would see the main benefit as making Raspian not feel like you are swimming in treacle. And since my main aim would be multi boot, a newer Pi is not high on my list until RO supports partitions properly. (I have a dozen old PCs that will run Linux better than a Pi.)
Yes I have, a friend ordered one, but it never turned up. |

Yeah, it looks like they’re having some difficulties delivering the final few. I got mine order in early on, and it turned up about Christmas-time. I have a spare black one, if you’re interested. Unused, still in the box. |

Thanks, but I won’t be recasing this Pi again. I’m quite pleased with how it’s working. (3 hours 20 streaming Dark Asylum radio via Digital CD so far, and no probems.) What is the performance difference between USB and SD !Booted RISC OS? I guess the other things that would make me buy a new Pi would be: support for 2560×1080 resolution; RISC OS support for multicore, wifi or bluetooth; a new Pi with USB 3. |

Speed will be the same for big files, but much better on external HD/SDD for small files.
Already working… |

Oooh! Which models? And do you have details? |

That appears to be support for standard modes, which 2560 × 1080 isn’t. As far as I can tell, standard modes are baked in, but the larger ones are blocked by a rate limit. Of course maybe it is (or will be) a standard mode in newer firmware. The Pi1 and Pi2 have many components in common, but does that include the video output? |

Is there an easy procedure? As far as I can see it would be download and write RISC OS SD image. Copy everything but the PC partition file to the ADFS formated USB drive. Copy the contents of the DOS partition to a smaller SD (to prevent wastage). Install then configure as per a Risc PC in the past. |

Wouldn’t copying it put it in the wrong place? That would surely make it just a big file instead of something that looks like a DOS partition to the bootloader. |

Yes, so I have corrected the post to say what i actually meant. |

You have your answer :) Yes, there is an easy procedure. Copy all files of filecore partition from SD to USB disc. |

No. hdmi_cvt is for specific modes. And 2560×1080 could work (need to be tested). |

Thanks, this looks hopeful. I got exactly the same pillar-box screen, but sparklies when loading. But without warnings about not being in the right mode and no option to expand the screen to full width. I also lost the mouse just before the display icon. I deleted the duplicate line and dropped it to 50Hz this solved the sparklies. However I suspect I need a newer risc os to get the mouse back, and a suitable screen mode. hdmi_pixel_freq_limit=300000000 |

Watching this conversation, I really might bite this bullet and try to drive the 3840×2160 monitor at 24 Hz…when I’ve installed the new RiscOS. |
Jess Hampshire (158) 864 posts |
I just installed the nightly (and zero pain.) And put those lines back. I now have a working 1920 × 1080 desktop in the centre of the 2560 screen. Now to have a go at a mode file. |

I was thinking to get a complete SD image from https://www.riscosopen.org/content/downloads/raspberry-pi – what exactly is Zero Pain? I keep seeing it mentioned, but I’ve not found any explanation of what it is. |

As I understand it: RISC OS allows access to somewhere it shouldn’t, by default. If software chooses to write there it has the potential to cause problems. The newest versions block this access, but this will cause some software to crash. Zero pain fakes the access so most software will still work. I just tried to make a mode file, but it didn’t work correctly – the screen wasn’t quite full width, but (presumably) seemed to think it was because it didn’t line up. |

Of course, you need an MDF too. Use CVT for this, as suggested before. |
