24bit audio and Noise Shaping

I’ve recently produced some programs that take 24bit audio and ‘noise shape’ it down to 16bit. The main reason I did this was because of discussions about a fancy new audio ‘idea’ called MQA that re-invents wheels to make them proprietary. Whilst I though simpler open and free ideas should work as well with no strings. However… From the results it occurred to me that: A) For RO users interested in ‘high rez’ audio, using Noise Shaped 16 bit versions of their 24bit source material might well be a way to get better quality though the still-16bit ROSS. And to let them use players that choke on 24bit files. B) It seems we aren’t going to get a 24 bit ROSS anytime soon for practical reasons – too much work, and better things for people do do. However it struck me that adding the ability to noise shape 24 bit into 16 bit is much easier. So might well be a feature which someone could add to the ROSS far more quickly and easily than upgrading the entire chain to 24 bit. So I hearwith raise the idea to see if people will consider it. :-) Jim |
