Charting our way

Posted by Steve Revill Sun, 24 May 2020 11:23:00 GMT

As countries around the world grapple with the COVID-19, many people will currently be required to stay indoors, or to change their work patterns and switch to video conferencing. Drinking more? Exercising less? It certainly feels like an interesting time to see what the data says about what’s happening in our community.

Take a look with us at various metrics from ROOL’s data banks for the period January to April, to see how things looked heading into the “new normal”.

Overall patterns

The ROOL website saw an uptick in data delivered during March, though has now returned to normal. Maybe everyone’s downloaded everything to keep themselves occupied?

Progress towards RISC OS 5.28

The status for each of the candidate ports has been kept up to date, many of the platforms are at or close to meeting the stable release criteria set out. Several issues remain with the iMX6 port, and a significant shortfall with the Pi 4’s non-working USB sockets.

Developers can roll up their sleeves to contribute and everyone else is encouraged to download the nightly builds for a test drive.

We plotted downloads for each platform but had trouble fitting all the Raspberry Pi numbers on, even with a widescreen monitor, accounting for a whopping 53% of the total (2nd: Risc PC, 3rd: Titanium, 4th: Wandboard, 5th: OMAP3). Plotting on a logarithmic scale fits better:

You can also help us by proof-reading the updated User Guide – with budding authors sought for the two remaining chunks.

Keeping the postman busy

Amazingly, post is still getting through, if a little delayed to some destinations. There’s been a drop in items ordered as might be expected:

One thing that does fit through even the slimmest letter box are our stylish Polo shirts and T-shirts, perfect for if you’re out exercising in rare glimpses of the outside world!

Take care and thank you for your support.
