Get back to BASIC at no cost, by RISC OS FR

We have secured a focused version of the latest Desktop Development Environment from ROOL, specially tailored to programmers wanting to write software for RISC OS in the popular BBC BASIC language.

We offer you to get a free version of the BASIC DDE, including:
- The BBC BASIC Reference Manual
- The ABC compiler
- A completely revised ABC operating manual
- User Interface Toolbox and resource editor tools (ResEd, ResTest, ResCreate)
- Various programming tools (SrcEdit, SDCreate, Allocate, CreateSEC)
- The latest version of the !System components

ABC is a tool for compiling BBC BASIC software into native code. It has been used to compile large projects and will improve the speed of your software by around a factor of 5.

This package will be sent to you by e-mail, with a personal serial number. The serial number can also be used to purchase the full featured DDE from ROOL thereafter, with a 10% discount on its price.

Please note: this software is still a commercial product, of which RISC OS FR pay the licence on your behalf. You may not distribute or resell your copy or transfer the licence to anyone else. Please try to limit your requests to one per household.

How to get your copy of BASIC DDE?
1 / Take one or more screenshots of your RISC OS desktop, without cropping or resizing. Please hide your personal data, if present.
2 / Submit your screenshots by e-mail to abc@riscos.fr. Your e-mail address will be used to register your copy of the BASIC DDE with ROOL.

The screenshots will be published on the RISC OS FR website, anonymously and in the public domain, so that they can be seen and used by as many people as possible.

Now with VFP support!

Uhh… Vince? Have we just found the winner for this year’s Best Show Of Initiative? Or must it wait until next year now?

If it wasn’t for that fact that we know David Feugey we’d be using the “If something seems too good to be true….” saying!

Some people told me that their mail providers see the archive as potential virus.
Of course, their is no x6 code inside. So don’t worry.
Just contact me with an alternative email address.

I’ve been a bit reticent about requesting one of these, because I’ve never felt the need to compile my BASIC programs – generally they run fast enough to keep me happy, and on the rare occasions they don’t I just write heavily used bits in assembler, to be assembled at runtime.

But if they’re really not going, give me one and I’ll give it a whirl. I don’t promise to make really good use of it though, so do give it to someone else if there are other takers.

There’s one here: http://clive.semmens.org.uk/RISCOS/screen.jpg – is that the sort of thing you want? It’s a 3840×2160 screenshot, with a 1920×1200 screenshot in a window, amongst other things. Or is there something in particular you’d like on screen?

As you want. This one seems to be OK.I’m waiting for the mail…

Not sure exactly what you’ll be doing with the screenshots, so I’ve made a new one without my email address on it – and sent it to you. Not that my email address is at all private really – it’s on my website which is public. It’s not a 4K one this time though.

I missed that bit – I can’t see me being bothered if visitors to RISC OS FR want to email me… 8~) …if you want to use the 4K screenshot as well, feel free – I can send you the original sprite instead of the jpg if that would be better.

Are there any left, David? I sent a screenshot but haven’t heard back. I’m new to RISC OS so my screenshot’s a bit bland but let me know if you need anything else.

Almost 30 licences distributed.

Found my copy buried in the spam folder. The pdf manual for toolbox does not open, otherwise everything is working perfectly. What a fantastic initiative, thank you very much.
