Risc OS locking up when running/opening certain applications

I’m still able to move my mouse but it won’t let me click or type when this happens. I’m using the official raspberry pi power supply so I don’t think it’s a power problem. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? |

Which apps? Is it a Pi 3? |
Raidan (6050) 12 posts |
Yes it’s happened on both my Pi 3 and my Pi 3+. It’s happened on Grapevine, Netsurf, and Manga. |

Hmm, that’s not the problem I was suspecting (some apps use the old “SWP” instruction which doesn’t work on Pi 3, but Manga and NetSurf aren’t affected by that). Hopefully someone else will have some ideas. |

TCP/IP, TCP/IP and TCP/IP. Or some overclocking with the standard RPI power supply (not powerful enough: needs 3A). |

Firstly, welcome. If you unplug and then replug the keyboard does it start working? If so, the USB stack has dropped the device which is indicative of power issues and you should try plugging the keyboard/mouse into a powered USB hub. The official Pi PSU’s have certainly had issues in the past, none of mine provided enough power so I replaced them all with powered hubs. |

Oh the irony of this item being posted on Remembrance Sunday’s Centenary! |

Well, it’s not like the bloody British even bothered to turn up or anything…
Much simpler solution than all this keyboard shaking: Press Alt-Break and see what task is stalling everything, then kill it. But I’d check the network settings before the keyboard, because generally the keyboard either works or it doesn’t, not a sort of maybe… |

Sorry for the late reply but here’s some more info. I’m using the 2.5A official power supply. Netsurf version is 3.8, Grapevine version is 2.21, Manga version is 0.31, and Risc OS version is 5.24. I haven’t altered the config.txt file. Keyboard is unbranded and mouse is an old dell. Neither have any fancy lights or anything so they shouldn’t be drawing too much power. I’ll try alt-break the next time this happens. Maybe this is just user error seeing as I’m new to the OS. |

Have you tried the RISC OS 5.27 beta rom for the pi? That has a change to the Pi’s USB software which fixes problems with attached interrupt devices (keyboard, mice). |
Raidan (6050) 12 posts |
This may be a dumb question but how do I use the beta rom? All I know how to do is download the Risc OS image and burn it to the SD card. |

Alright thank you for the help, I think everything went smoothly. I now have a lightning symbol appearing in the top right of my screen. Is that an indication of a problem? |
Raidan (6050) 12 posts |
Apparently the lightning icon means the Raspberry Pi isn’t recieving enough power, however, this never occured before I updated to 5.27 just now. The lightning symbol appears if i’m loading a webpage on the internet but goes away after it’s done. I just tested another brand new power supply that has an output of 5.0V-2.4A and I’m still having the lightnig symbol pop up. |

Not sure why the 5.24 rom doesn’t show the flash symbol, I only started getting it when I updated the other loader files in the same folder as the rom. What do you have plugged into the pi? It doesn’t take much for the voltage to drop low enough for the flash symbol to come on. If I power my pi from USB I have the flash symbol on all the time but it seems t work ok with the 5.27 rom which has the USB fix – the 5.24 rom doesn’t work properly. Other than the flash being displayed does the 5.27 rom appear to fix your other problems? |

I believe this is an issue in 5.27 as it appears most of the time on my pi-top laptop. It seems to be an issue at the desktop, as I can’t reproduce it outside of the desktop when hitting the CPU hard or under Linux. |

I don’t have 5.25 (15/10/18) but I’ve just tried 5.25 (28/5/18) and the current 5.27 and they appear to behave identically with regard to the screen flash symbol. I have a usb voltmeter plugged into my pi and the flash comes on at about 4.63v and goes off at 4.64v. The desktop on my pi is idling at 4.63v (its USB powered) on both versions of the rom so the flash is always on. If I unplug my monitor’s powered hub it rises to 4.64v and the flash goes off. |

I know the power is below par but it is a setup I used to test the USB fix that was added to the early 5.25 rom. I have no problems at this voltage even though it is below USB spec – a hard disc won’t work at this voltage though. The 5.24 rom doesn’t work at this voltage – keyboard and mouse has problems. |

I don’t think that matters much. There are four things at play here:
So – good supply, good cable, and shiny connectors. ;-) 1 Remember, total power requirement is Pi + everything powered from it. 2 My Beagle won’t even make it past attempting to boot if the power is less than 5V. That’s why I run the Beagle off a PSU intended for an Iomega Zip drive. It’s a solid 5V with some oomph behind it (needed to be, to run the Zip drive). 3 I’m sure World+Kitten wishes they’d just used a regular barrel connector rather than trying to stuff all that current into a micro USB connection… 4 Not that things like specs count for much when my Samsung S7 talks to its charger and kicks the output up to 9V and draws ~2.1A… |

You need to check the voltage at the test points, PP1 / PP7 I think. |

While not pi3 specific (as I don’t have one yet), I recently tested a collection of original pi PSUs, as I was having low voltage issues with an add-on interface. All 4 ranged from 4.8 to 4.9 volts off-load. So did several USB charger units. |

That is unusual, a decent quality component that made it into an RM PC. Must have been a Friday afternoon build. :) |
