CDBlaze issues

Having replaced the VRAM and backup battery in a RiscPC running RISCOS 4.02, I have nearly everything working again except CDBlaze. When I click the icon in the icon bar the mouse pointer flicks between a normal pointer and an hourglass a few times and then I get the message “Timeout on Selection”. The CD writer is a SCSI device (the only SCSI device in the machine) connected to a Cumana SCSI card. The drive shows up correctly when I do *devices. The terminator is OK and cables have been reseated etc, and various CDR’s have been tried. I have a second almost identical RISC PC and I have swapped drives and the CD writer in the machine with the issue works fine in the working machine. I have looked for configuration differences between the two machines but haven’t found anything yet. I haven’t actually gone as far as swapping the SCSI cards over – they are identical – and as I don’t have any other SCSI devices on the bus it could be a card issue rather than a CDBlaze issue. With that in mind, any suggestions? Many thanks, Paul. |

Which drive is it? If CDBurn is compatible with it, I could send you a test version to try out. “Timeout on selection” is a typical SCSI bus timeout error, but it could be everything from power supply to cabling to termination to SCSI podule to CDBlaze itself. My gut instinct is “power supply” if the drive works fine in a different machine. Does the writer work with a normal CD as a CD-ROM drive? |

The drive is a Yamaha CRW8824S. I have swapped the ribbon cable and re-seated the jumpers. I can change ID and the change is reflected in the response from *devices. The Cumana card’s ID is 7 which seems right. Having said that, I am more inclined to think it is a SCSI problem rather than a CDBlaze problem – especially as you said the timeout error is a typical SCSI bus error. I wonder if the SCSI card needs some kind of setup which was lost when the CMOS was cleared? I can’t seem to find anything relevant but it’s a long time since I played with Risc PCs and I might be missing it. Thanks, Paul. EDIT: The card is a CUMANA 16/32 BIT SCSI II, DRG NO CL1822 ISS3 |

IIRC, no SCSI card needed special treatment to expose CD type devices on the bus for interested applications like CDBlaze. It was often a problem with harddiscs to configure which device ID carried which drives and which partitions, but not for CD devices. E-Mail me, I’ll arrange a CDBurn test version that should be able to handle this Yamaha drive. If it doesn’t work, we will at least have (meaningful, at least for me) debug output to maybe get to the bottom of this problem. |

Thanks Steffen. Not sure if I’m missing something on this forum, but I can’t find your email address or a PM option. My email address is paul (at) broadoak.net Paul. |

Hi Paul, I mailed you a test version, let me know if it works for you. |
