Raspberry Pi Compute

It will. There’s some other, related, work that needs to happen first. Has anything changed now that the model A+ has been announced? |

I am happily running RISC OS on CM with Filecore-formatted USB stick. Has any more progress been made regarding the use of eMMC as the primary filing system. It was mentioned earlier that this was demonstrated at a show last year but have there been any official releases yet? |

emmc on CM now just works. Copy an SD card image in USB Boot mode and boot it up. |

Just as a bit of a heads up, I spotted the last paragraph in this article and combined it with Western Digital selling Pi Compute goodies in the UK. This unfortunately lead me to splashing out on the Media Stick and SATA adaptor! I also noticed that the Compute Module was going quite cheap on the RS website so took a punt. I just hope the Compute Module 3 rumour turns out to be correct, AND the connection is the same. This thread on the Pi forum seems to suggest it will, and is well into development… Will post again as to how well the Media Stick and SATA Adaptor work with RISC OS, if at all. |

Initial tests with the SATA adaptor suggest that it works as a storage device but not as a boot device. When set to boot from SCSI, it just sits there waiting for the disk to start spinning. If the boot is cancelled, the disk begins to spin up and it appears on the icon bar as a drive, and works perfectly well. Speed appears to be similar to USB. The initialisation requires something too late in the boot sequence to get it going for booting from it though. Similarly, as I expected really (as there’s nothing much going off with it), the Media Stick also just works, and can be powered from a standard “back of the telly” USB port. It’s a very peculiar choice of case, though, which sandwiches the PCB, but leaves the edge and the Compute module exposed (but you can’t get it back out without undoing the screws)! The button is nice and the case mottles the otherwise blindingly bright LED. |

I had a similar issue with a regular (non-Compute) Pi, and it was because I didn’t *Configure SCSIFSDrive 4 (despite it showing as 0 in HForm). Have you tried that? |

By jingo! That’s done it! I had to do that on the PlusBerry Pi, too, and I completely forgot! Thanks, Chris! I reckon, if this is compatible with the soon-to-be-released Compute 3 module, this could be the basis of a lovely podule for a RISC PC. Ethernet’s an issue though, what with it not being present! Benchmarks are as follows:

The SATA adapter should hopefully work just like the SATA adapters we have been using in the RaspberryRO for the last three? years.
That’s to be expected as it connects to the Broadcom chip by USB, as does all storage on the Pi apart from SD/EMMC |

Looks like the new versions are out: One with the 4Gb eMMC, a lite version without the eMMC, and a new I/O board with microSD slot, useful for the non-eMMC version. I’m sure the I/O board v1 was only £25 when I bought it, so I guess I’ll stick with that, rather than spending what feels like a lot of money on a microSD card slot. Pin compatibility is there, so they should still work, even if slightly warmer! |

The original price was over £100, so you got a bargain!
Unless you use the lite version of the module you won’t be able to use that slot but you do get four cores, faster and more! |

Of course you only buy one development kit (£196) which comes with both Lite and Full Compute Modules 3. You then buy just the modules for your project which fit onto your purpose built PCB – the modules on their own are around the £25-£30 mark, less when ordered in quantity. |

If I understood the press release correctly, perhaps a useful feature of the Pi Lite is that it can be connected to much larger eMMC storage via the pins on the board. |

Just repeated ROMark 4 benchmarks on the above WD SATA adpator with a Kingston mSATA SSD attached, and I’m slightly shocked! October Low Vector ROM courtesy of Chris Hall.
It “felt” faster, but that looks to be fast for a twenty six quid add-on! Oh, I wish they’d put ethernet on it! And scrapped that silly little button. |
