RISC OS Pi - Working Games

As a SA RPC owner, it was a struggle to get games working. On the Pi, things seem trickier still. So what are the RISC OS Pi games that just work? I’m not much of a gamer so I haven’t spent a great many hours testing. These are confirmed as working very well however: Starfighter 3000 (b) (5.21) Key: Any more we can add to the list? |

How about using ADFFS? |

ADFFS is great* – but I think it would be helpful to have a list of games which work natively (or, failing that, with the aid of Aemulor). This might help lower the “activation energy” required to convert a potential RISC OS user to an actual, because they’ll have a list of games they know will work out of the box.

There are three possibilities:
The only ‘problem’ with ADFFS is that it’s today only for RPI 1. But it’ll change. |

Natively working games on the Pi1 are detailed at the top of this thread.
The Pi1 compatible games (and download links if we have permission to release them) are detailed in each release of ADFFS, the current public release being at the top of this forum. YouTube videos of most working games on the Pi are in the JASPP Channel. The ~130 games that are Pi compatible under the next release of ADFFS are detailed here. It’s due out this month and adds partial ARMv7 support.
As ADFFS is being actively developed, I’d advise using the latest version of ADFFS and a fairly recent build of RISCOS. Each ADFFS release details the minimum build date of RISCOS 5 required. It aims to be hardware agnostic up to the Pi. ADFFS has highlighted a lot of bugs in RISCOS and eratum in CPU cores, whilst workarounds for the later can sometimes be implemented, bugs in the OS do require RISCOS to be frequently updated. The next ADFFS release requires a build newer than Apr 6th 2016 for example. As a final more general note, software that works on the Pi1 may not work as intended on the Pi2/3 due to deprecated instructions that are frequently used. Essentially a mirror of the problematic migration from ARM610 to StrongARM. |

Jon: Excellent. Wasn’t aware of that thread. It’s a fairly slim collection of native games, but more than I knew about. Although not a gamer, I might get another SD with the express purpose of creating the optimum ADFFS setup. |

That is what I am doing. Make a separate card and plug in as required. Just like putting in a floppy and running a game in the 1980s! |

Jon: AAMOI, what do you use to record the videos? I’m guessing something that sits on the HDMI connection to capture the output from the Pi? Edit after a quick search: Something like this I presume. (Added to my Amazon basket, but I’ll hold off ordering in case you have a specific recommendation). |

I use an AVerMedia Game Capture HD II which sits between the Pi HDMI and TV. I chose that particular model as you can fit your own HD and it uploads direct to YouTube, no PC involved. |

Ah. In the intervening period since asking that question and now, I forgot I’d asked. When I was on Amazon yesterday looking for something else, saw that I’d added the one I found to my basket so decided to order it. Oh well. Still, I’m not bothered about directly uploading to YouTube and stuff like that – so it doesn’t matter. (But thanks for answering anyway.) |

Hi Jon, But I think, for the Xeroid and Legends of Magic videos, I’ll buy and use one of those. Looks like a nice piece of kit. |

Hi Anthony I don’t have your e-mail address so I can’t send this direct to you, but… Radio 4, Tuesday of this week, 1130, John Field. iPlayer is your friend. |

Hi John, Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed listening to that and have forwarded it to my Dad who plays a number of John Field Noctures. Regarding contacting me, there is a contact e-mail link on the www.amcog-games.co.uk website under the ‘About’ tab. Best Regards, |
