Is there a hardware round-up anywhere?

Hi, Having been away from RISCOS for ages I’m wondering if there is some sort of list of the various RISCOS compatible hardware available with the various good and bad points of them? Just to help people (me!) decide which to go with… Cheers! |

Archimedes, A540, A3000, A7000, … , Risc PC, Iyonix, Beagleboard and Pandaboard are now obsolete (don’t know how long you’ve been away). ARMX6, Titanium, IGEPv5 are compared here and a summary of their differences (based on a talk given to MUG on Saturday 17th Sept 2016 and [expected to be given] to ROUGOL on Monday 17th October 2016 is here – hope this helps. Benchmarks of all recent machines are here. |

You could always get an ITX bracket for a Pi from CJE Micros…? For the price of a Pi you might as well get one and give it a try to see if you want to spend more money. I did that and have been drooling over a Titanium board but sadly have no spare funds! It’s quite an eye opener really loading up Raspbian vs. RISC OS on a Pi just your see how much faster it is. |

Or, if you’re attending the London Show you may find a ‘best of both worlds’ option to make use of RISC OS on a Pi. ;-) |

If you’re near London, Monday’s ROUGOL meeting could be useful as we’ll have a lot of the optons on display and Chris will be giving his views: Or the London Show is only two weeks away, on Saturday 29th October: |

You might also find the following thread and videos useful: Midlands User Group , ARMX6 Unboxing video, MUG video , Wakefield Acorn User Show video (8:33 – for the RISC OS connected 34 inch monitor!!!) |

Would it be possible to use something that has an i.MX6 processor but isn’t designed specifically for RISC OS like this: http://www.tinygreenpc.com/utilite-pro-32gb.html EDIT: Just contacted them and there is no way to install any more storage in the Utilite (despite the storage being described as “SATA” it is in fact soldered to the motherboard). Can someone who is lucky enough to be visiting the show in London this weekend keep us updated here with any new hardware or changes to the lineup? I know that CJE have just announced a portable RISC OS computer which looks quite good and RISCOSbits intimated earlier that they had something to bring along – would be interesting to find out what that is… |

Ooh I like the new case too! And it has an mSATA socket…. What about the Snapdragon processor though…? |

Unless R-Comp have good business ties I’d hazard a guess that the Wandboard wasn’t designed for RISC OS :-) (R-Comp’s ARMX6 is based around the Wandboard) |

Yeah what I should have perhaps said was “how easy would it be to install RISC OS on a device that nobody has installed RISC OS on before given that it has a processor that is supported in another device that already has RISC OS ported to it!” Sort-of-academic though because of the price they’re selling it at you don’t really get any benefits over a Rasbperry Pi with a large SD card (except its in a nice case…) The new Utilite looks very nice but if there is no possibility of running RISC OS on it then it doesn’t represent any kind of step-up (or change) from what I’m currently using (a 2004 1GHz Celeron Sony Vaio…I reckon would be about the same performance as a 1.5/1.7GHz ARM CPU if they were both running Linux). That sort of processor speed would make RISC OS run really fast though I’d guess….if the Snapdragon is supported which I suspect it isn’t! All this said and done it does look like a Raspberry Pi is still the best entry point for new or returning RISC OS users (despite the fact that once you have it running you’ll probably have cables coming off in crazy directions like some kind of electric squid has just landed on your desk). I am still keen to hear news of any new developments unveiled at the weekend though… |
