John: I’m not sure what it is you’re seeing in my posts, but it isn’t actually there. Steve: Not when I’m programming – only when I’m fighting against stupid UIs on certain operating systems. And I don’t use substitutions. ;) Getting back to the topic: Glancing at the ‘Games’ section of the JASPP forum, the most recent release appears to be Oh, no! More Lemmings in early October. Unless anyone has any better suggestions, then, I’ll add that to the games category. That’s an interesting bit of timing, given Tony’s most recent release is Moptops – and I like the idea of having both a Lemmings game and a Lemmings-inspired game in competition. :) (I’ll edit both those into the list above now). |

For those not reading usenet, comp.sys.acorn.misc has a discussion underway following the announcement of the 2017 London Show date, which (unsurprisingly) is now covering a little more than just next year’s show date. One of the topics being discussed is show attendance – with the suggestion that those who don’t attend1 are, as a group, should be nominated for a broken cog. I have six listed this year already, so there’s always next year (as well as the other/free text option) – but if I was to consider it this year, which option could it replace? 1 Obviously, excepting those who don’t attend but with a properly good excuse – like Rick, David, etc. who aren’t in the UK. |

Hi Vince, I would suggest next year as that would give you time to finish the long awaited WebChange manual as well ;-). |

Drop the EU vote broken cog option. It’s off topic and only likely to cause arguments :-( |

…only by those still dumb enough to think it’s a good idea… |

I have a work colleague who regularly says “never argue with and idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience” If we replace that entry can we have "all those RO users that don’t update to a Beagle/Pi/Titanium/ because… " |

If we must have a the EU vote in the broken cog then I would suggest it would be better to have it phrased around the complete failure of the Remain camp to make the case for staying in the EU and allowing the negative and devisive campaigning of both parties to come out on top. The Chicken Little brigade within the Remain campaign should be the real broken cog nomination here as to continue to denigrate both sides of the electorate who voted is not going to solve the real problems we now face. |

Off to Aldershot. Meanwhile, the community support forum is under a spam attack. Since we don’t read those characters it’s more like a D.o.S attack. User ID 3122 |

The referenced server resolves as an Amazon Japan host. Probably spamvertising a cloud hosted site which isn’t in Japan. |

I’ll take the EU one out. FWIW, I had that and a directly related one (48% of the voting public for voting to remain) as my initial two nominations before starting to compile the list. So I started out with an entirely neutral set of nominations – but as I started to add things, one had to go. :) (And while you can argue it’s off topic, I can argue it’s not – the value of the pound has been affected, and that’s affecting the price of things within the RISC OS world.) Anyway, we now have two contenders to replace it:
So the question is: Which? I’m tempted to say both, and pull something else off – the ARM one perhaps. From the comp.sys.acorn.misc thread about the London Show, I see a suggestion to add Tim Hill to the show of initiative thread for his Google calendar of RISC OS events – that’s fair enough. And generally browsing, I think Q’s AMCS could be worth adding to the innovative/interesting project. |

and to the broken cog because the calendar doesn’t work in NetSurf. :) |
Vince M Hudd (116) 527 posts |
As I’ve just added to that thread, that’s out of Tim’s control – he’s simply using an iFrame to show Google Calendar content – so I don’t think that’s fair. Perhaps the broken cog should be Netsurf for not having a good enough Javascript implementation yet. (/daft troll) ;) |

And one might point out that while the Pi is made in the UK (mostly), the raw parts are not… |
Vince M Hudd (116) 527 posts |
I’ve just updated the draft list to reflect the changes I mentioned earlier. There are far fewer gaps now than the original list, so that’s good. Ooh, and I’ve just thought of another addition: David Feugey in the show of initiative category for running the Pi contest. He’s encouraging development by doing that, so I think that should go in. (clicks…) |

Returning to the subject of the survey: Prompted by the suggestion of a set of questions that really should have been included from the beginning, I will include it in the questionnaire again this year. (In which case, for completeness, at some point I will dig out the results of the last two and get them online.) The new questions basically ask people how much they’ve spent on software and (separately) hardware over the last year, and how much they think they will spend in the coming year. A useful thing for hardware and software developers to see. |
Steve Pampling (1551) 7962 posts |
Extra question, which may explain people not spending: “are you saving up for something?” |
Vince M Hudd (116) 527 posts |
Yes – I’ll add something along those lines as well, with a simple yes/no answer. I’m about to start preparing the voting form now… except, that it’s about time I tidied up that process – so I’m about to write the nomination list in a text file that can be parsed programmatically to produce the voting form. (In theory, this could be done in PHP on the server, but I’ll do it locally and upload the result – I’ll knock something together reasonably quickly in BASIC; I’m a lot less rusty in that than PHP.) With that in mind, I’ll also simplify the text for each item: Previously I did it (mostly – with some variations) in the form: Nomination – line of blurby text (Where Nomination was the product in question, with a link – usually to a product-related web page if possible) What I’m going to do this time is just have: Nomination – Company/Person And in most cases, the link will be to a search on RISCOSitory – since whenever I mention something, the page includes a link. Where there is no mention of the subject matter on RISCOSitory, it’ll be a direct link instead. |

That’s kind, even if technically, it’s a RISC OS FR initiative :) |
Vince M Hudd (116) 527 posts |
I’ll word it as RISC OS FR rather than you personally on the final form. I ended up having to do other stuff, so I didn’t get as much of done of the program to generate the form and associated PHP as I’d like – but as of the last few minutes, it takes the CSV file with all the categories and nomination data and generates that part of the form perfectly. (I should have done this ages ago. It’s been one of the goals from the start – but changing the format of the poll a couple of times meant it had to be put off.) |

Just noticed a potential limitation in the voting form. You are asked, if you use other systems, if it is Windows or Android or iOS etc. I answered that I use Windows and I use it more than RISC OS. Truth is, I use Windows a lot less than I used to (I’m writing this on an iPad for example) because I have moved away from writing code in VB to general word processing and watching videos and such. While Google Docs is a PITA at times, I like it more than WORD plus I can use an iPad and Bluetooth keyboard when mobile. In short – I use RISC OS less than everything else but I don’t have exclusively “one” alternative device. |
Chris Mahoney (1684) 2117 posts |
Neither do I, but the question asks which I use the most. In my case I can still quantifiably say that I use OS X more than anything else (iOS would be in second place). If you think that you use Windows and iOS about equally then that does complicate things, but you’re probably using one quite a bit more than the other even if you don’t realise it. It’s probably worth thinking about for next year though! |
Vince M Hudd (116) 527 posts |
Not quite – as Chris points out, you are asked to answer for the one you use most. However, having slept on these comments, I now realise there is a limitation – it’s just not the one you think it is. For next year – if I keep the survey – that batch of questions could be expanded slightly: 15. By choice, do you use any platforms other than RISC OS? Rather than a simple yes/no, I think this would be better served with something like:
Question 16 then becomes: 16. If so, which operating systems do you use? With the question allowing a multiple selection. And a new Q17, which is pretty much the current Q16: 17. Which of those operating systems would you say you use the most? Options as now. Question 18 can be 17 as now, perhaps reworded to clarify that it’s referring to the OS used most. And the current question 18 would therefore bump up to Q19 – but whether to refer to the OS most used, or other platforms in general. The remaining questions can then just be renumbered as necessary. I’ll change the source files when I switch on a RISC OS box shortly, and see what it looks like. |

Steve – WROCC syndrome is as Rick has said (though if I’d answered first it would have been a lmgtfy.com link!) I’m pleased to say that you might now need to rename it… ;-) |
Vince M Hudd (116) 527 posts |
Noo… that would be like rewriting history! But I’ve received the email (good solution, btw – not dissimilar to what I suggested to someone else) and there is now something on RISCOSitory |
