Software compatibility list

The aim of this page is to provide an accessible summary of software which currently works on RISC OS machines newer than the Iyonix PC (ARMv5), such as the Raspberry Pi (ARMv6) and BeagleBoard-xM (ARMv7). Due to changes in the ARM standard in version 6, not all software which works on the Iyonix is guaranteed to run on the newer hardware. This page gives a summary for developers of how to make their software compatible.

A wide cross-section of RISC OS software has now been made compatible with ARMv6/v7, but the table also lists software which has not been altered but appears to work nevertheless, as well as including some software which is known not to work properly or at all, to warn the unwary.

Note that ARMv6 machines (such as the Raspberry Pi) are capable of running software that isn’t ARMv7 compatible by putting them into compatibility mode using the CPU settings in Configure. Raspberry Pi is shipped with compatibility mode as the default so, when writing software, make sure you test your code in strict mode too to ensure it’ll work on ARMv7 machines.

From RISC OS 5.24 onwards extra memory checks were added where possible to protect “zero page” operating system workspace. This unearthed some old bugs in software, requiring updates, often provided free of charge.

The layout of the table is as follows:

  • Software: The name of the program.
  • Version: If the program has been updated to be ARMv6/v7-compatible, then this is the number of the first version to work fully. If it has not been updated or is known to be incompatible, it is the latest version tested.
  • Description: A brief description of the program’s purpose.
  • Status: One of:
    • ARMv7 OK: The program is believed to be compatible with ARMv6/v7 by the person responsible for providing the newest version (whether official or unofficial). (This doesn’t necessarily imply continuing support.)
    • Seems OK: The program has been thoroughly tested (with alignment exceptions on) by its users and has not displayed any faults, but the developer(s) have not officially stated that they believe it to be compatible.
    • Has Issues: The program only works with alignment exceptions off and/or some functionality is unusable.
    • Not Working: The program doesn’t start up or is so crippled as to be useless.
    • Unknown: This program has not yet been either updated or thoroughly tested.
  • Support: One of:
    • Supported: The official developer(s) are involved and are willing to fix any bugs or compatibility issues reported, regardless of its Status. (Some programs may not yet have been confirmed compatible, but are still supported for anyone who cares to report the issues they find. Equally a compatible program may still have undiscovered problems.)
    • Third Party: The official developer(s) are not involved but others have taken responsibility for compatibility in an unofficial capacity. No guarantee of support.
    • Ongoing: The program is not yet compatible but work is known to be taking place to remedy this (please provide a citation).
    • Source Available: The program is open source, but unmaintained. Perhaps you could help?
    • Not Supported: The program is closed source, and abandoned, or at the least further updates are unlikely.
    • Unknown: Nobody has asked the developers, or they didn’t provide an answer.
  • Notes: Clarify anything necessary or add information here.
