» Shared Resources

Overview

Applications should store all their resources within their own application directory. However, if an application is using data that other applications may want to access, the preferred approach is to create a shared resource directory which contains the data. The application’s !Boot file should set up a system-variable holding the shared-resource directory’s pathname.

An example of a shared resource directory is !System, which is used as a location for resources used by many applications.

Note

Applications should not add their own resources to !System, they should be added to their own shared resource directories. Shared-resource directories’ names are centrally maintained by RISC OS Open Ltd, and must be requested using the !Allocate application.

To download the !Allocate application and for more information on registering and allocating names for use with RISC OS, please click here.
