Nut Pi pack now available for the Raspberry Pi

Posted by Steve Revill Fri, 26 Oct 2012 13:45:00 GMT

RISC OS Open have joined forces with some of the leading software developers in the RISC OS community to bring you the Nut Pi – a package of flagship RISC OS software specifically for RISC OS Pi.

The Nut Pi comes on a specially branded SD card, formatted specifically for RISC OS machines containing the following fantastic programs:

  • MoreDesk (7th software)
  • SparkFS (David Pilling)
  • PhotoDesk (Fourth Dimension)
  • WimpWorks (Jaffa Software)
  • luafox (luafox)
  • Iconizer (MathMagical)
  • Gutenprint (MW Software)
  • Writer+ (MW Software)
  • Organizer (Organizer)
  • CloneDisc (Piccolo Systems)
  • DataPower (RComp)
  • Grapevine2 (RComp)
  • Messenger (RComp)
  • NetFetch (RComp)
  • MusicCDtest (RComp)
  • NetworkPrinting (RComp)
  • SafeStore (RComp)
  • TouchType (RComp)
  • Desktop Development Environment (RISC OS Open)
  • Impact (Sine Nomine)

For more information about these great programs, read out more detailed descriptions here.

As well as being a great collection of some of the best commercial RISC OS software available, this represents a fantastic deal; the total retail value of the bundled software is over £600 but the Nut Pi is available for just £35 plus P&P – that’s cheaper than the Desktop Development Environment on its own! You can buy it from the ROOL shop today.

Please note: the software supplied with the Nut Pi is specifically built for Raspberry Pi hardware and will not function correctly on any other hardware platform. Use on any other platform is completely unsupported by ROOL and the individual software vendors. You need RISC OS running on your Raspberry Pi to use Nut Pi – please see this page for more information.

About the Raspberry Pi:

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn programming.

About RISC OS:

RISC OS is a fast, light-weight operating system specifically designed for the ARM architecture. It was developed by the same team of engineers who created the original ARM processor and has undergone continual development over the following decades. For the past six years, RISC OS has been opened up into a community project, with its source code published at the RISC OS Open web site. RISC OS is the property of Castle Technology Ltd and can be licensed for commercial use.

About RISC OS Open:

RISC OS Open Limited (ROOL) manages the source code to RISC OS. We are an organisation run on a largely voluntary basis. We also offer professional services to anyone who is interested in developing commercial products using RISC OS.

Does the Nut Pi SD card also have the R-Pi RISC OS ROM and Boot sequence on it?

BTW – fantastic job on all of this. A great day for RISC OS! ;)

Great Deal! Is I only own a Beagle and a Panda, would this run (at the SD Card Slot to install/copy the software) also there or is it somehow totally restricted to the RPi ?

Steve Revill (20) said 3 days later:

No, the card doesn’t include RISC OS – that helps keep the price down because we don’t then have to pay licence fees to Castle.

And yes, the software is all locked-down to the RPi hardware – it’s part of the deal I swung with all the various software vendors.

Thanks for making all of this available for the PI, you are truly amazing people.

Just one question: If RISC OS isn’t on the card, how do you use Nut PI with the PI (which only has one SD card slot)? Is it possible (and allowed) to copy the software onto the boot card?
